Flammability Testing for Toys
The risk of fire in toys or childcare items and their materials is one of the hazards that need to be evaluated. This is to reduce any inherent hazard due to the presence of a prohibited material or to the flammability of certain toys when these are close to ignition sources.
The Eurofins Toys and Hardlines network of companies can provide flammability tests of toys and their parts to determine their compliance against the different regulations and standards that apply worldwide to these products.
Some of the standards included in our service scope are:
- EN 71-2 for mechanical and physical properties of toys
- Textile: ASTM F963-17 Annex A6 / 16 CFR 1610
- Solid: ASTM F963-17 Annex A5/ 16 CFR 1500.44
- CPSIA
- Canada Toys Regulations SOR/ 2011-17
- AS/ NZS 8124.2: 2016
- ISO 8124-2 for mechanical and physical properties of toys
- China GB Standards and requirements on the flammability of general and specific toys
Products not meeting the requirements established in the different global toy regulations and standards are in danger of being recalled and, more importantly, they will pose a risk to children.
The requirements described in the different regulations and standards are intended to reduce injuries produced by an accidental burn from a toy and materials.
Toys such as disguise costumes and their accessories (such as masks, beards and wigs), toys intended to be entered by a child or soft toys are examples of toys regarded in the different legislations where specific requirements are defined. For instance, when sold in the EU, such items are regulated under Toy Safety Directive (TSD) 2009/48/EC, and CE Marking is required.
