Below you will find a monthly summary of product recalls and alerts in Europe (Source Safety Gate (RAPEX)).

 

 

Europe

 

RAPEX (European Commission Rapid Alert System for dangerous non-food products – Alerts reported by EU national authorities).

 

The following 11 alerts regarding Personal Protective Equipment were reported between weeks 35 and 46 of 2023.

Chemicals

Latex gloves

The gloves do not protect against chemical agents but are labelled as doing so, thus giving a false sense of safety to the users.

The product does not comply with the requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment Directive.







Cuts

Protective gloves

The gloves do not protect adequately against abrasion and can easily tear.

The product does not comply with the requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment Directive (PPE) or EN 388 or EN 420.

Riding helmet

The helmet can be broken easily, resulting in sharp edges.

The product does not comply with the Personal Protective Equipment Regulation.




Drowning

Lifejacket

The life jacket does not have enough buoyancy and the mouth freeboard is not sufficient. This life jacket may not keep the user sufficiently above the water and the user can drown.

The product does not comply with the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Regulation or EN 12402-4.






Health risk / other

Bicycle Helmet

The shock-absorbing capacity of the helmet is insufficient.

The product does not comply with the Personal Protective Equipment Regulation or EN 1078.

Particle filter mask

The particle/filter retention of the material is insufficient.

Injuries

Safety vest

The vest does not have a sufficiently retro-reflective surface, meaning that a user is not adequately visible in situations where high visibility is essential.

The product does not comply with the Personal Protective Equipment Regulation or the European standard EN 20471.

Fall arrester

The wire cable fails under load. A person using the device will not be protected from falling.

The product does not comply with the Regulation on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or EN 360.

The products are classed as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The products were not supplied with the required compliance documentation, user instructions or markings to demonstrate that they had been adequately conformity assessed.

The products do not meet the requirements of The Personal Protective Equipment (Enforcement) Regulations 2018 and Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on Personal Protective Equipment.

The product was not supplied with the required compliance documentation or markings to demonstrate that they have been adequately conformity assessed.

Falling

Climbing harness

The product has no declaration of conformity, does not contain instructions in English and the CE (UKCA) marking is not followed by an NB number. Other required details such as the manufacturers’ name and address are also missing.

The product does not meet the requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment Regulation 2016/425.

Face mask

The masks may not offer adequate protection against substances hazardous to health as claimed by the product.

The product does not meet the requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment (Enforcement) Regulations 2018.

Safety harness

The CE marking is not followed by an NB number and there is no certified notifiable body. The harness is therefore not authorised to be classed as Category III PPE.

Over the ear earmuff (helmet attached)

The earmuff headband force decreases over time when used in combination with certain helmets. This decrease in force could lead to the earmuffs offering less protection.

Motorcycle leggings

They contain a weakness in some of the seams of the garment which meant the tear strength was compromised and no longer met the CE standard the garment was approved for.

It has been identified that the sheath of the rope may wear suddenly during falls.

Some airbags may be rolled instead of folded, which could result in the inflation time being increased. This may increase the risk to the consumer as the product may not perform as expected when relied upon as an airbag.
