Testing and Certification Services for Protective Clothing for Motorcyclists

Riding a motorcycle can be an exhilarating experience but it can also be dangerous to the biker. In the event of an accident, the right and testing-proof protective clothing can help prevent serious injuries.

The protection for motorcycle riders is considered PPE and must therefore meet Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and the applicable standard.

Motorcycle riders’ protective clothing

Motorcyclists' clothing is designed to shield them while they ride, while still allowing them to maintain control of their bikes. This includes jackets, pants, one-piece and two-piece suits, and impact-resistant garments.

EN 17092 is the standard testing against this kind of motorcycle riders’ protective clothing:

  • EN 17092— Part 1: Test methods
  • EN 17092— Part 2: Class AAA garments — Requirements - Class AAA garments: Offer protection from impact and abrasion, using materials and construction that meet the highest requirements
  • EN 17092— Part 3: Class AA garments — Requirements - Class AA garments: The second highest level of protection against the dangers of the most diverse driving activities.
  • EN 17092— Part 4: Class A garments — Requirements - Class A garments: Offer a minimum necessary degree of protection from impact and abrasion
  • EN 17092— Part 5: Class B garments — Requirements - Class B garments: This class is for specialised garments, designed to provide the equivalent abrasion
protection of Class A garments but without the inclusion of impact protectors.
  • EN 17092— Part 6: Class C garments — Requirements - Class C garments: This class is for specialised nonshell, impact protector ensemble garments, designed only to hold one or more impact protectors in place, either as an undergarment or as an overgarment.

Motorcycle riders’ protective gloves

Motorcyclists' gloves are designed to keep their hands and wrists safe while riding, while still allowing the user to handle the bike's controls. They should also provide protection from the environment and any potential accidents.

EN 13594 is the standard testing against motorcyclists’ protective gloves:

EN 13594 — Protective gloves for motorcycle riders - Requirements and test methods

Motorcycle riders’ protective footwear

Motorcycle riders’ protective footwear is designed to provide some mechanical safety for the feet and possibly the lower legs of the rider while still allowing them to maintain full control of their bike and operate the necessary foot controls.

EN 13634 is the standard testing against motorcyclists’ protective footwear:

EN 13634 — Protective footwear for motorcycle riders - Requirements and test methods
