Introducing ‘HYBIT’ – new OECD Test No. 321 added to Aquatic Service Portfolio
The Hyalella azteca Bioconcentration Test (HYBIT) provides a non-vertebrate test for bioconcentration in aquatic environments as an alternative to OECD Test No. 305: Bioaccumulation in Fish*
In 2020, Eurofins Aquatic Ecotox GmbH (Niefern, Germany) took part in the ring test for Test System OECD 321 and, after successful participation, is pleased to share that the service is now available.
This is important news for companies subject to REACH evaluation processes
Offering a great alternative to OECD 305, HYBIT is a faster, lower cost, vertebrate-free test method. Some benefits in summary:
- The HYBIT test uses invertebrates (Hyalella Azteca) which are ethically non-contentious compared to the OECD 305 test
- The HYBIT test is often less time consuming than the OECD 305 test
- HYBIT is more environmentally friendly, as less test substance is required for the same number of samples as OECD 305
- With HYBIT, more studies per year can be conducted when compared to the OECD 305 test
In short, HYBIT offers a better route to bioconcentration testing than OECD 305, at reduced cost, due to the simplified study design and process.
