DBA Keystone Human Services (USA)
KHS was founded in 1972 as an organisation dedicated to ending the practice of institutionalising people. Originally based in Harrisburg, it has since expanded to help thousands of individuals every year.
The individuals to whom KHS provides care include those with mental illness diagnoses, intellectual disabilities or autism, all of whom tend to be greatly affected by COVID-19 distancing measures. As they can be dependent on in-person care, COVID-19 presents a particular emotional challenge to these people, as well as a health-related one, potentially causing extra anxiety and stress.
The project supported by the Eurofins Foundation in 2020/2021 helped approximately 260 people with intellectual disabilities, mental health diagnoses or autism in Lancaster County, US. As a direct impact of this grant, staff were well prepared and educated on the health and safety protocols and were able to provide reassurance and routine, instil confidence, and provide as much in-person support as was necessary to those who were highly susceptible to the emotional upheaval that social distancing and routine disruption can cause.
