EnForce Research Programme (Sweden)
In 2020, Eurofins Foundation provided a grant for research on PFAS in biota/food, linked to the EnForce Programme, a major research programme at Örebro University (Oru).
The research focuses on environmental forensics (from a scientific perspective) and has four research areas PAC (poly aromatic compounds), toxicological effects of mixed contaminants (in- and organics), PFAS (poly- and perfluorinated substances) and microplastics.
PFAS research includes sensitive analytical methodology to analyse food and (a)biotic samples, and advanced approaches to characterise PFAS using total organofluorine analysis (TOF) and total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay in order to understand environmental and human exposure to PFAS.
Eurofins Foundation’s grant helped recruit staff to conduct methodological developments of chemical analysis which helps characterise toxic substances in food samples. Preliminary results have been produced and are giving direction for future method development, which will focus on samples after extraction, which may have an improved oxidation rate.
