Heavy metals in cosmetics and personal care: Guaranteeing their safety

Heavy metals in cosmetics and personal care products present a major challenge for the industry because of their potentially dangerous effects on health. Metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic, when present in high quantities, can cause a range of health problems, from skin irritations to more serious conditions such as neurological disorders or cancer. That's why it's crucial to monitor their presence in the products we use every day.

To protect consumers, strict regulations have been introduced worldwide to limit the presence of heavy metals in cosmetic products:

  • Europe: Article 17 of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and standard EN ISO 21392:2021
  • United States: Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations
  • China: NMPA regulations
  • Canada: Health Canada regulations

In addition, other products may contain traces of these metals, often due to raw materials or manufacturing processes such as hygiene products, including menstrual tampons. As a result, these products are increasingly regulated to ensure their safety.

The Eurofins Cosmetics & Personal Care laboratory network offers a full range of analytical services to detect and manage heavy metals in your cosmetic products, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards at every stage of the product life cycle:

  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS)
  • Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS)
  • Ion Chromatography - Liquid Chromatography (IC-LC)
  • Atomic Fluorescence and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AFS/AAS)
  • Thermal Decomposition Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (Direct Mercury Analyser) to ISO 23674 standard
  • Routine testing for 14 heavy metals in finished products and their raw materials.

We have extended our services to include the assessment of heavy metals after migration on urine simulants, using the EDANA method.

Eurofins Cosmetics & Personal Care is committed to supporting you by offering state-of-the-art testing services and proven expertise to ensure the compliance and safety of your products.
