Better Cotton CoC and Cotton Consumption Independent Assessment
Better Cotton has established Chain of Custody (CoC) to promoting and creating transparency and traceability of cotton grown under Better Cotton Standard along the complex supply chain. For its Retailer and Brand Member (RB Member), Independent Assessment of their cotton fibre consumption is required.
Eurofins Assurance is an approved Third-party Verifier (3PV) to support your Better Cotton CoC as well as Cotton Consumption Independent Assessment requests to demonstrate fulfilment and commitment to more responsible sourcing.
What is Better Cotton
To drive responsible and sustainable production of cotton, Better Cotton was established in 2009 and later launched Better Cotton Standard, a holistic yet measurable standard, for all stakeholders to follow and benchmark systematically.
Since inception, adoption of Better Cotton Standard has been on steady rise and in the 2022-23 season, Better Cotton recorded 5.4 million tons of Better Cotton grown by 2.2 million licensed Better Cotton Farmers in 22 countries.
Better Cotton Chain of Custody
With such a high volume of Better Cotton produced each year, it has thus become essential to track the movement of materials among supply chains with clearer evidence and documents to protect all stakeholders and consumers. In view of this, Better Cotton Chain of Custody is introduced to focus on the transaction and traceability of Better Cotton.
Based on ISEAL, Better Cotton Chain of Custody allows organizations to leverage one or multiple CoC Models to proof their Better Cotton sourcing activities and quantities. Applicable to stakeholders in the farming, manufacturing, and sourcing roles, whether they have BCI membership or not, BCI CoC is an on-site validation against Better Cotton Chain of Custody Guidelines V1.4.
By adopting Better Cotton CoC, businesses will be able to gain enhanced understanding of the social and environmental issues within the cotton supply chain and manage traceability of Better Cotton effectively.
Cotton Consumption Independent Assessment for Brand and Retailer Member
Brand and Retailer Member (BR Member) of Better Cotton is required to calculate and report their total cotton fibre consumption regularly and submit relevant supporting documentation in compliance with the guidelines outlined in "Measuring Cotton Consumption: Requirements and Guidance."
Starting January 2024, RB Members, unless exempted, are also obligated to engage an Independent Assessment of their cotton fiber consumption measurement to ensure the consistency and reliability of their results. The requirement and frequency of the Independent Assessment are determined by their membership size category and total amount of cotton fiber consumption. Independent Assessment is required if RB Members wish to leverage specific claims (such as Advanced Claims and the On-Product Mark).
