Geography and Climate

Thailand is located at the centre of South East Asia. To the north, it is bordered by Burma and Laos, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia and to the west by the Andaman Sea.  The country covers an approximate area of 513, 120 square kilometres. The north is noticeably more mountainous, the centre predominantly plateau and the south consisting of a narrow strip to the Malay Peninsula.

The Thailand field station is situated at Takhli around 200 kilometres north of Bangkok. The station is situated at the foot of a small hill composed of limestone. Thirty kilometres to the North West of Takhli mainly consists of rice growing areas. To the south, the main crops are sugarcane and maize.

Thailand enjoys a tropical climate that is typically high in both humidity and temperature. The local climate is tropical and characterised by monsoons. Mid-May to September is rainy, warm and cloudy in the south west. In November to mid-March a cool, dry north east monsoon passes through. The south is always hot and humid.

Soil types

Within the region the soil tends to be clay-loam which is a mixture of sand, clay and silt.
